Nhulunbuy Respite Facility
DEAL provided investment support to Carers NT in 2019 through our Economic Development Fund to support development of its short stay and respite facility in Nhulunbuy. The newly renovated facility opened in early 2020 and services clients in Nhulunbuy and surrounding areas. Since completion of the renovation project in May 2020, there have been a total of 28 jobs created in Nhulunbuy, 11 of which are held by Yolŋu employees.
Carers NT CEO Steve Vitone, said the operation of the East Arnhem Aged and Disability Wellbeing Centre in Nhulunbuy has successfully commenced and they now have a number of Yolŋu NDIS Clients in the centre, one of whom is a longer-term resident under a Supported Independent Living (SIL) arrangement.
“This is the first time that SIL has ever been successfully implemented in remote Australia and it is a great achievement of Carers NT as an organisation and our local team to enable this to happen. We have been receiving universally positive feedback from local and regional stakeholders, service providers and community organisations across the entire East Arnhem region. Carers NT acknowledges the great support we have received from the team at DEAL and look forward to expanding our successful model of care across East Arnhem” Mr Vitone said.
The Carers NT Nhulunbuy facility is an important and much needed service for the region, and we look forward to seeing the opportunities that are created through this project.
