Nursery establishment
DEAL provided investment support Gulkula Mining Company in 2018 through our Economic Development Fund to enable establishment of a plant nursery to produce quality planting stock for mine rehabilitation, as well as develop stock for a range of timber and non-timber products such as bush tucker species to support new industry development and supply in East Arnhem.
The nursery supports the mining rehabilitation needs of the Gulkula mine which employs 20 people and nursery grown plants are being sold within the East Arnhem region for a range of land management purposes and for landscaping projects. The nursery can produce up to 100,000 plants per annum, which means it is well placed take advantage of future forestry industry projects in the region.
Gulkula’s plant nursery is now an accredited member of Nursery and Garden Industry Australia Limited which is the peak industry body representing commercial growers, retailers and suppliers in Australia.
Gulkula Mining Company is Australia’s first Indigenous owned and operated bauxite mine leveraging its capabilities to provide Yolŋu with opportunities to make a difference.
